This a simple, delicious and comforting dish we make ALL the time for dinner. When my friends who are relatively new to Indian food ask me to make this dish every time we meet. Eat it with rice, flat bread or use it as a dip for pita chips!

Split pigeon pea (toor dal/arhar dal) 1 cup

Ghee 2 tbsp
Onion ,finely chopped 1 medium
Tomatoes, finely chopped 2 medium
Garlic,finely chopped 3 - 4 cloves
Turmeric powder 3/4 tsp
Cumin seeds 1 tsp
Red chilli powder 1 tsp
Salt to taste

Heat half of the ghee in a pan. Add half of the chopped onion, tomatoes and garlic and sauté till golden. Add turmeric powder, dal, two cups of water and salt to taste. Stir and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for twenty minutes. Heat the remaining ghee in another pan. Add cumin seeds. When they begin to change color add the remaining onion and garlic and sauté till pink. Add red chilli powder and sauté for two to three minutes. Add this seasoning to the dal, simmer for two minutes and remove from heat. Serve hot.
My son begs for this and will eat it at every meal! I'm sure you will love it too as will your kids!
